Privacy policy of the Talking Pictures® app

The Talking Pictures mobile app and web app are subject to Swiss data protection law, in particular the Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and any applicable foreign data protection law, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union (EU). The EU recognizes that Swiss data protection law ensures adequate data protection.

Transparent handling of personal data is important to us. This privacy policy provides information on what personal data we collect, for what purpose and to whom we pass it on.

Collection and processing of personal data

Using the app does not require any personal data to be entered, neither as a healthcare professional nor as a patient.

Your Rights (access and data portability)

Since the app can be used without registration or the creation of a user profile, and since we do not permanently store any personal data (such as name, date of birth, address, or health information), we do not technically have any data sets that we could link to a specific individual or export.

Voice output

Image captions or translated free text can be spoken aloud. The voice output is provided by Google Text-to-Speech.

(See section “Use of Google Cloud” below)

Voice input

Text can be spoken instead of typed in the search field and in the translation window. The spoken text is transcribed using Google Speech-to-Text.

(See section “Use of Google Cloud” below)

Text translation

In the translation window, spoken or typed text can be translated into the patient's language. In the settings, you can define whether the text should be translated via DeepL or Google Cloud Translation.

This feature is only available if the use of DeepL and/or Google Cloud is enabled in the settings (see sections “Use of DeepL” and “Use of Google Cloud” below).

Use of DeepL

When using DeepL for text translation into the patient's language, note that the spoken or typed text is sent to DeepL's servers. Only the unaltered text fragment to be translated is sent to DeepL, for interpretation by their translation service. Therefore, it is important not to include any personal data such as the patient's name.

The use of DeepL can be enabled or disabled in the settings.

Use of Google Cloud

When using Google Cloud for text translation into the patient's language or for voice input or transcription, note that the spoken or typed text is sent to Google's servers. Only the unaltered text fragment or audio recording to be translated is sent to Google, to be interpreted by their services. Therefore, it is important not to include any personal data such as the patient's name.

The use of Google Cloud can be enabled or disabled in the settings.

No trackers and use of local storage

The app does not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party cookies. It only stores certain settings, such as your selected image set or language, in your local storage to improve your user experience. This means that no personal data is stored or transmitted.

Hosting

Whether you use the application as a mobile app or as a web app via a URL, the central backend and the web app itself are hosted in Switzerland. All technical operations are therefore subject to the strict Swiss Data Protection Act (DSG).

Matomo

Anonymised data on user behaviour is used for analysis and optimisation of the app. The analysis is carried out on an instance of the open source software Matomo, which is installed on a server in Switzerland. The IP addresses are completely masked so that no conclusions can be drawn about individual persons.

Server Log Files

When using the app, the hosting provider automatically stores technical access data in so-called log files. This includes your IP address, the browser used, the operating system, the time of access and any error messages. We do not use this data to identify you personally. However, we reserve the right to check the log files retrospectively if there are specific indications of unlawful use.
